Jefferson was born into one of the most prominent families of Virginia's planter elite. His mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, was a member of the proud Randolph clan. By the time Jefferson won admission to the Virginia bar in 1767, he was already one of the most learned lawyers in America. Jefferson left home to attend the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia's capital. Thomas Jefferson was one of the earliest and most fervent supporters of the cause of American independence from Great Britain. He was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1768 and joined its radical bloc, led by Patrick Henry and George Washington. In 1774, Jefferson penned his first major political work, "A Summary View of the Rights of British America," which established his reputation as one of the most eloquent advocates of the American cause. A year later, in 1775, Jefferson attended the Second Continental Congress, which created the Continental Army and appointed Jefferson's fellow Virginian, George Washington, as its commander-in-chief. However, the Congress's most significant work fell to Jefferson himself.

- 1774 Thomas Jefferson wrote A Summary View of the Rights of British America, an important document in the growing independence movement
- 1776 Wrote Declaration of Independence, passed after some alteration
- 1776 Elected to Virginia House of Delegates also appointed to revise Virginia laws.
- 1777 Drafted Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, passed by General Assembly in 1786. Jefferson later said this was one of his most significant achievements.
- 1778 Drafted Bill for the More General Diffusion of Knowledge. Education was always a key feature in Jefferson’s beliefs
- He wrote the Declaration of Independence which freed our people. We celebrate this day as the 4th of July, in memory of Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson helped to purchase land which was called the Louisiana purchase. This purchase was land for people to settle. It doubled the size of the United States after it was purchased. (It was $15 million)
